'Get Brexit Done'.
Despite the British public going to the polls this Thursday, we are not voting on Brexit.
The mandate we give those who represent, and therefore govern us, is about their manifesto commitments, and not solely about the UK’s ongoing constitutional crisis.
But let’s get one thing straight, should the Conservatives win, or any party for that matter, they will take this election as a sacrosanct mandate. That the issue of Brexit is settled. That they have been instructed by the population to ‘Get Brexit Done’. It is an untruth, fake news.
A General Election is no way to settle constitutional issues. And this election is the second time the Conservatives have played politics, failing in 2017, and hopefully failing again this time.
The Conservative party cannot be trusted at their word. Their attempts to sort out the mess they single-handedly created is ridiculous, but unfortunately it seems as if they have coerced enough support this time.
And why is this? Because whether you support the Labour opposition or not, it is unarguable that they have been completely useless in standing their ground. Labour should win this election by a landslide on Thursday, and yet under Corbyn, they won’t.
It hits a deep rooted problem in British politics – that whilst we want to retain our traditions, and we’re perhaps nervous to tamper with our First Past The Post electoral system, we have to deal with the consequences that our parliament is not representative of the country it serves.
Whilst a major issue this Thursday is Brexit, we’re voting on much more than that. We’re voting on the sort of society we wish to be.
For me, that isn’t pulling up the drawbridge and forcing the UK to go it alone. It’s not nationalising every industry and continuing to sit on the fence on Brexit. It’s not pulling Great Britain appart.
Instead, it’s a society which works together, that wants to remain working with our friends and neighbours within the EU, that has an strong economy in order tackle the biggest challenges we face like climate change and inequality.
And most of all, I will be supporting political reforms to end the two-party duopoly that has dominated British politics for decades (if not centuries), so that the UK’s democratic deficit is addressed. We need proportional representation. We must abolish the House of Lords. We must allow every voters voice to be equal in each Parliament we elect.
This election is no way to settle Brexit (and won’t), but it is an opportunity to change the course our country is headed. The only way to resolve Brexit is to take it back to the people for them to decide on the final deal.
So wherever possible, please vote for a candidate and party who back political reform and a People’s Vote in order that we can bring to an end this constitutional crisis, solve the impasse, and return to addressing the biggest issues within our society.
