This is what I think of the world.

The selected highlights.

I'm sat here, thinking about what I need to do in order to become a more rounded author or creative and in truth it's always the same part where I fall down – research. Where that is with character or plot backgrounds, or the knowledge needed to explore a particular subject with my camera, I never put in the hours to understand and build a world to inhabit which isn't flat in dimension.

So, like most humans, I want the easy life and instead resort to writing short posts about my ineptitude for graft. Perhaps I'm being unfair, but on rereading a lot of my work (unpublished, of course) I feel like there isn't any depth to the story. But then, the stories which fascinate me are not those of great historical reference, but of subtle humanity where snippets of background add to the notion of the human condition.

But it's difficult to create, otherwise everyone would be doing it and getting away with it, and in reality you have to suffer to get anything good. You have to switch off from this instant update, endless scrolling world where things move by the second and retreat into a coma in order to facilitate any of the creative output, something I'm also terrible at.

The solution seems like an easy one, doesn't it? Turn ones phone off, disconnect from the world and play some LPs. But what if I miss something urgent, what if I'm isolated because of this choice. It makes no difference as I already find myself most weekends, writing in my notebook, staring through my iPhone's camera or wandering through the city on my own. So what's the difference?

We live in an overly digital world, and therefore need to regain a connection to the analogue, for if we don't we are entrapped in a slavery to the perception of others, and that which they hold of us, presenting ourselves only in a hyper-edited light. The selected highlights to brag about our lives which are often monotonous and mundane.
